Nature's Numbers Exhibit
June 5 – September 7
Math is everywhere in Nature! Look around-- the pattern of spots on your dog, the delicate symmetry of butterfly wings, the shape of crystals in salt are all evidence of some of the mathematical properties of nature. “Nature’s Numbers”, from The Franklin Institute, provides opportunities for play with 20 graphically lush, tactile, interactives on math and nature. The SALT PONDS: A Bird's Eye View of Colors and Textures in South San Francisco Bay
July 7– September 1
Take a glance out the airplane window on approach to SFO and you will notice the South Bay’s patchwork of vivid salt evaporation ponds. These ponds support a five-year-long process of solar evaporation that yields 600,000 tons of salt a year. As water in the Bay travels down the Peninsula from 3% to 30% salinity, it evolves through a succession of bright colors, evidence of halophilic algae, bacteria, and other organisms that thrive at elevated salinities. Photographer Cris Benton has highlighted this tapestry of colors in a series of photographs taken with kite aerial photography, on display at Coyote Point Museum July 7th through September 1st.
